Even as Congress president Sonia Gandhi is said to be preparing for a meeting of Opposition leaders on Thursday, the party is wondering how to finalise the guest list.
The difficult part would be in hosting leaders of the Samajwadi Party and BSP at the same time. While Congress is giving outside support to the Mulayam Singh government in Uttar Pradesh, the party is trying to forge an alliance with BSP for Lok Sabha elections.
Congress leaders say it is not necessary that Singh and Mayawati would be invited for the meet and that their representatives in Parliament should suffice.
On earlier occasions too, neither party has been keen on attending such meetings — one reason why Congress abstained from hosting meetings after Mayawati’s interest in an alliance.
Intent on using this opportunity to flaunt new allies, the party may also invite DMK, with whom it finalised seat-sharing. Moreover, Congress would also like to firm up ties with Sharad Pawar’s NCP.
