UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Army chief General J.J. Singh will leave for Srinagar tomorrow for a tour of the quake-hit areas.

The leaders, along with PM Manmohan Singh, met at an Air Force Day reception this evening where the Army chief briefed them on the situation.

Singh comfirmed late this evening that 34 Armymen had been killed and around 60 wounded in the quake. The Army’s Chief of Staff of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps Maj Gen V.K. Singh has been appointed nodal officer in charge of relief activities and has been entrusted with coordinating movements of supplies to the affected frontier posts of Uri, Kupwara, Poonch, Tangdhar, Bandipora, Keran and Baramulla.

Mild tremors in parts of mp

MORENA: Mild tremors were felt in some parts of Morena and adjoining areas of Madhya Pradesh, triggering panic among people. There was no loss of life or property. The slight intensity tremors rattled some areas and people rushed out of their houses, additional district magistrate M.K. Agarwal said. All departments and agencies associated with disastermanagement have been alerted, Agarwal added.

HP: Landslide on Chamba road

SHIMLA: A high intensity earthquake left several houses and roads damaged in the state. The tremors, which hit at 9.25 am, lasted for more than a minute in the state. The quake caused road breaches in some areas of Chamba district. The Chamba-Langhra road was damaged at Kakeera, 60km from chamba, while the Chamba-Dargala Road was blocked due to heavy landslides near Dhargala, 50km from Chamba.

Govt promises Rs 100-cr aid

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet has decided to release Rs 100 crore as ad hoc assistance for Jammu and Kashmir, Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy said. Asked if the Prime Minister had offered help to President Pervez Musharraf for quake relief in Pakistan, he said: ‘‘Not yet. The PM will get in touch with the Pakistan President in due course.”
