The Chitrakoot district administration was put in an awkward situation on Monday when bandit Dadua’s son Veer Singh demanded his father’s body so that it could be cremated at his native village of Deokali under Manikpur police station. The 26-year-old is also the chairman of Chitrakoot’s Zila Panchayat.

When he failed to get the police’s help in the matter, Singh rushed to the district magistrate’s residence, but in vain. He even approached a few journalists to help convince the authorities to hand over his father’s body to him.

According to police officials, as the law and order situation in the district was far from good, and it was not advisable to cremate Dadua’s body in Deokali. “There are as many people mourning his death as are celebrating,” said an official.

Later in the day, the administration cremated all six bodies, including Dadua’s, in the presence of Singh.

“They said there are too few policemen,” a visibly upset Singh told reporters. Singh, who admitted that he had not seen his father since he was a child, said he initially did not believe news reports about his father being killed.

Meanwhile, Nanhi, wife of slain dacoit Angad Patel, also reached the hospital to claim Patel’s body. Nanhi is the Gram Pradhan of Basila village. She claimed she had not met her husband for 15 years. However, the man who accompanied her disclosed that Patel used to visit his village, but only for a few minutes at a time.
