The police have booked leading city doctors on charges of forgery. Dr J R Sofat and his son Dr Sumit Sofat have been booked by Division Number 5 police station under Sections 120, 420, 467, 468, 469 and 471.

The sections are non-bailable and according to the police, the father-son duo is on the run.

In the past too, Dr Sofat has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The Sofats have been booked earlier for making a false case of a successful IVF pregnancy which the doctors claimed had been done on a woman in her sixties. In another case, the Medical Council of India had suspended the medical licence of Dr Sumit Sofat when the latter refused to acknowledge the MCIs letters over the issue of illegal advertising.

Division Number 5 SHO Shivinder Singh, 8220;This case pertains to a land deal in 2000 where Dr Sofat was the buyer. However, the deal fell through after both parties registered a series of FIRs against each other. An inquiry revealed that the father-son duo had not only filed false complaints but also committed fraud in the case.8221;

It has been learnt that Dr Sofat had purchased a 1,200-square yard plot on the Ferozepur Road in 2000. The deal for the plot was sealed for around Rs 70 lakh.

Dr Sofat had not got the registry of the plot done on the grounds that he was under the scanner of the Income Tax department.

Despite pressure from the seller, Dr Sofat refused to get the plot registered in his name.

The selling party cancelled the power of attorney which stood in Dr Sofat8217;s name.

In 2004, a settlement was brokered between the two parties wherein Dr Sofat sold the plot back to the owner on higher rates. When Dr Sofat came to know that the owner of the plot had sold it to a third party at a handsome profit, he not only refused to give up the plot but also got it registered in his name using a fake power of attorney.

Dr Sofat had filed a complaint of kidnap and murder against the seller of the property alleging that they had killed his servant. The police traced the servant.
