DECEMBER 5: Shivaji Nagar Gymkhana (SNG), Nagpur and Thane Metropolitan Gymkhana (TMG) will clash in the men’s final in the Kanara Engineering, ThumsUp and United Phosphorus-sponsored Bombay YMCA Open Basketball tournament played at the Ghatkopar YMCA court, Pant Nagar here tomorrow.
These two teams had met in the final at the St. Xavier’s tournament also. TMG had lost then, now they get a chance to avenge the defeat. Both had easy semi-final victories here. SNG thrashed Bombay YMCA 68-43 while TMG cruised past Central YMCA 68-57.
The women’s final will be contested between old rivals, Central Railway and Western Railway.

Women’s semi-final: Central Railway 81 (Meena Pandey 20, Sheelamma Verghese 14, Cyline D’Costa 11) bt Ghatkopar YMCA 37 (Pramila pawar 22).
St. Andrew’s move up
St. Andrew’s (Bandra) and St. Stanislaus will contest in the final of the boys under-16 League when they scored easy victories in the semi-finals of the Thums Up-sponsored Inter-Schools Hockey tournament at the St. Andrew’s ground, Bandra. St. Andrew’s won 3-0 over St. Anne’s, Orlem with lester Almeida, Atif Ansari and Paul Lobo scoring for the winners. In the second semi-final, St. Stanislaus won 2-0 over Don Bosco, Matunga. Abhijit Chalke scored both the goals.
In the girls under-16 quarter-final league, Canossa beat Apostolic Carmel 1-0 with Sumila Pereira scoring the winning goal. In another match, St. Xavier’s, Kanjur Marg also won 1-0 over St. Joseph’s, Bandra. the goal, was scored by Sarika Temkar.
Electric hold Caterers
Tata Electric held Royal Caterers to a goalless draw in a Harwood league match of the MDFA at the St Xavier’s Ground, Parel, today. With this, both teams have finished their league matches with Caterers qualifying for the Super league which starts on Sunday, Dec 7.
Earlier in the day, a Division II league match between Personnel Search Services (PSS) and Mumbai Mahanagar Palika Kreeda Bhavan (MMPKB) ended in a 1-1 draw. Mario Delly took MMPKB into the lead with Suresh Arya scoring the equaliser.
Don Bosco in final
Don Bosco, Matunga and St. Xavier’s, fort will contest in the boys under-16 final in the ThumsUp-sponsored Inter-Schools Basketball tournament at the MSSA-Castrol court at the Azad Maidan here tomorrow.
In the semi-finals, Don Bosco won 46-13 over St. Stanislaus while St. Xavier’s were a close 40-39 winners over Anjuman-I-Islam.

Four players — Jyoti Lal, Sagar Masurkar, Omkar Kulkarni and Dinesh Barodia — are in lead with four points after four rounds in the Thane Janata Sahakari Bank-sponsored Thane District Selection Chess Tournament being played at Thane.
In the fourth round, there was a major upset as second seed Vijay Thik was beaten by under-10 State champion, Omkar Kulkarni in 29 moves. Omkar had two pawns on his `c’ file but Thik did not utilise the advantage and let the youngster exchange the pawn. Kaustubh Nilegaokar, GG Mokashi and Dharave are in the second position.
