Snatcher held while trying to escape

The police arrested a snatcher who had fallen off a speeding motorcycle, which he was riding along with his accomplice after snatching a purse from Phase IV in Mohali late on Thursday night.

The police arrested a snatcher who had fallen off a speeding motorcycle, which he was riding along with his accomplice after snatching a purse from Phase IV in Mohali late on Thursday night.

Raj Kumar of Gajewal village in Patiala sustained serious injuries from the fall while his accomplice managed to run away, Sub-Inspector Baldev Singh, who is investigation officer in the case, told Newsline.

A purse with Rs 2,200 cash, which the duo had snatched from one Kamaljeet Kaur of Phase IV, was recovered from Raj Kumar.

Around 8.15 pm on Thursday, when Kamaljeet was returning home along with her father Beant Singh, two motorcycle-borne youth intercepted them. Brandishing a knife and a rod, the duo asked to hand them over whatever valuables they were possessing, the police said.

The two snatched away the purse and some important documents from Kamaljeet before fleeing away.

The victim noted down the Chandigarh registration number of the bike and called the local police, which immediately swung into action and sealed all exit points of the city. 8220;In a bid to crash over a checkpost near Madanpura Chowk, the motorcyclists lost control and the pillion driver fell off while the driver managed to speed away,8221; the IO said.

The arrested youth, reportedly unemployed, was remanded to one-day police remand by a local court while a hunt has been launched to track down his accomplice.

8220;We hope to crack several other cases of snatchings in the area with the help of this breakthrough,8221; Superintendent of Police City Varinder Pal Singh said.
