Singapore, January 15: US fast food giant McDonald8217;s Restaurants is to station security personnel at all its 113 outlets in Singapore after an accident, violence and traffic jams marred its latest promotional toy offer.
Seven people were injured Thursday in a mad rush for Hello Kitty toys given away with hamburgers, some of which are just thrown away by parents seeking the toys for their children. Two weeks ago, a doctor and lorry driver had a fist-fight over the toys, inspired by the Japanese cat cartoon character Miss Kitty and her fellow feline friend, Dear Daniel.
The fast-food chain will also set a limit on the number of soft toys which patrons can purchase during the 40-day Hello Kitty promotion, which was launched New Year8217;s Day and has created long queues at busier outlets. Telephone lines at most McDonald8217;s outlets were busy Friday. Some outlets even have recordings to inform patrons that they had run out of the popular Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel toys. Spokesmen for the chain could not be reached by telephone for comment Friday, but the Straits Times said the company was quot;very sorryquot; the quot;euphoriaquot; over the promotion had led to the accident on Thursday.
