CHANDIGARH, Dec 23: In yet another case involving policemen, the city police today arrested sub-inspector Kuldip Singh Kahian for allegedly extorting money from a local octogenarian here. Kahian has also been charged with intimidating8217; the senior citizen in order to commit extortion. Police have also arrested a co-accused, Meenakshi in the case.
The case dates back a couple of months when a Sector 18 resident Ishar Singh Bedi lodged a complaint with the police that two women, Surjit Kaur and Meenakshi, approached him after he had placed an advertisement to let a part of his house on rent. Only Bedi, who is eighty plus, and his wife live in the house. Their children have reportedly settled abroad. While the two women were still in his house, a police party came to the place. The policemen alleged that Bedi was a seller of opium and searched his house. Then they showed a packet of poppy-husk and claimed it was recovered from his place. After quot;intimidatingquot; him, they allegedly took away Rs 20,000 from Bedi to hush up the case.
Sector 15 resident Surjit Kaur alias Paramjit Kaur is already in judicial custody as she was arrested on December 15 for allegedly committing theft in Bedi8217;s house. Bedi had alleged that she had made off with Rs 5 lakh after she sneaked into his house when he had refused to rent out accommodation to them.
Interestingly, the city police had sometime back introduced a scheme to help the elderly called quot;Helpsquot;. Under this scheme, each sub-inspector would adopt an elderly resident, particularly those living alone. The SI would make regular visits and ensure that the senior citizen did not face problems of any kind. However, the couple had not been adopted, police added.
