Black gets it right just in time
Byron Black snapped out of a trance in the nick of time when Rainer Schuttler threatened to runaway with the match and rallied magnificently to win 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, in the singles final of the 430,000 ATP Gold Flake Open tennis tournament, Chennai on Sunday. Black had to work harder than expected for the 58,000 cheque. In a glorious confluence of crowd power, ability and resilience, India8217;s Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, for the third night running, came back from a set down to beat Wayne Black Zimbabwe and Neville Godwin South Africa 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, to retain the doubles title.

Anand draws
Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, recovering from two defeats in his first three games, settled for a quick draw against FIDE world champion Anatoly Karpov in a drab fourth round of the Dos Hermanas Chess Tournament which saw all the games ending in stalemates. The world number two Indian has only one point from four games and was languishing at the bottom with Russian Peter Svidler after the fourth round yesterday.

Railways champions
The crucial league match to decide the winner in the women8217;s section was a big disappointment to the packed galleries at the National Volleyball super league at the TSGA Stadium today. Kerala girls fell an easy prey to the guiles of Railways and caved in without a fight, in straight sets. Railways won 25-19, 25-20, 25-18 to maintain their supremacy in the event.

Punjab lose
Though Punjab managed to avoid the humiliation of an innings defeat, they however had no aces up their sleeves to stop defending champions Karnataka from steamrolling them by seven wickets and entering the finals of the Ranji Trophy at the Gandhi Grounds in Amritsar today.

Punjab and Sind Bank steamrolled City Sports Club of Lahore 6-0, while Army Service Corps edged past Calcutta Port Trust 1-0 in the quarter-final league matches of the Beighton Cup in Calcutta today. The first match witnessed the bank team dominating the proceedings right from word go.
