Shakti Singh had set a target for himself for today, the second day of the Inter-State Athletics Championships in Calcutta. His aim was to cross the 20 metre-mark. However, the elements were against him and it rained throughout the day. Shakti Singh failed to reach his target, but came tantalisingly close. All his six throws were over 19 metres and in the process, he set a national record with his second throw only to re-set it. Shakti Singh cleared a record distance of 19.73 metres with his sixth throw and that has surely put him in the gold medal contention for the Asian Games.Delhi draw

DELHI gained five points by virtue of the 76-run first innings lead over Punjab and the match ended in a draw. There was no other reason for the home team to have continued their second innings till 22 minutes into the second session on the final day of their North Zone Ranji Trophy match at the Kotla in Delhi today. Delhi declared their second innings at 382 for six, setting Punjab a tall target of 460. The visitors finished at 144 for four when the match was called off after six mandatory overs.
