Syed Shahid Hakim, the Mahindras coach visited Calcutta and Dhaka in search of good defenders and he is back with success. Bernard Operanzie, the Nigerian defender and Hussain `Munna’ Munnafir from Mohammad Sporting, Bangladesh are likely to join the Orange Brigade.

“Bernard’s transfer documents has been sent to their Federation in Lagos and I am sure Munna will be joining us soon,” added Hakim.

He was impressed with the performance of Anisul Haq Rana, another player from Bangladesh. “Rana is a good forward and I hope he also joins us in near future,” he said.

Wifa notice
All the football clubs or teams affiliated to the Western India Football Association (WIFA) are hereby informed that those who have not submitted the registration forms duly filled in, should now submit them to the WIFA Office before August 7.

The affiliation fees, league fees and players registration fees for the year 1998-99 also should be remitted alongwith the registration formfor the year 1998-99 before August 7.

If any affiliated club/team fail to submit the dues and players registration forms before August 7, clubs/teams concerned will not be allowed to play further matches.

The affiliation of such clubs/teams shall be treated as cancelled and the WIFA Committee will decide whether to re-affiliate these clubs/teams.

Hockey team
Former India hockey captain Jude Felix is to accompany a national girls under-18 squad to Arnhem in Holland for the Sports Week there in August. The Europe-based Felix would train the girls during their stay in the Netherlands, according to the director (coaching) of the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), Cedric D’Souza. The programme is sponsored by the Royal Netherlands Hockey Association, D’Souza added.

Carrom squad
A seven-member Indian carrom team will be participating in the forthcoming India-Sri lanka Test Series to be held at Colombo from August 8 to 15. The team: Men: Mahendra Tambe, Jagan Bengle, Suhas Pomdekar, SanjayMande. Women: Anupama Kedar, P Nirmala and Monaz Tantra.
