NEW DELHI, February 4: Unseeded Indian Sunil Kumar upset Mark Weaver of Great Britain 6-1, 6-1 to set up title clash with top seed Kedar Tembe in the ITF Junior Circuit tennis championship here today.
Among girls, top seed Indian Sheetal Gautam overcame a fighting Radhika Mandke 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to make it to the final. Sheetal meets compatriot Sonal Phadke tomorrow.
In the doubles, third-seeded pair of Mark Weaver and Ahmed Wahla (Pakistan) clinced the boys title as they prevailed over Nomi Qamar (Pakistan) and Panu Karanes (Thailand) 6-3, 6-3.
The girls doubles was claimed by top-seeded Indian pair of Sheetal Gautam and Shruti Dhawan who breezed past second seeds Radhika Tulpule and Radhika Mandke (India) 6-0, 6-4.
Tembe today beat fourth-seeded Dipesh Rao (India) 6-2, 7-6 to enter the finals. The top seed faced no major difficulty in taking the first set but Rao offered some resistance in the second and forced the set to a tie-break. Tembe maintained his cool and won the tie-break 7-4 to take the match.
Punwire-sponsored Sunil, however, never had problems during his match as he beat fifth-seeded Weaver.
In the girls singles, Sheetal overcame Radhika in the semifinals, as she staged a dramatic comeback after being a set down while Sonia Phadke had no problem ousting Olga Ozyuba of Kazhakstan 6-4, 6-1.
The singles finals will be played tomorrow.
