CHANDIGARH, May 12: Some of the senior boxers of the city allege harassment at the hands of the Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) during the recently concluded National championships held at Vishakhapatnam. The pugilists are upset that they were not given proper kit by the CABA during the National meet. The players said that the CABA secretary had promised them that they would get kit after they return from the Nationals. Since then more than four weeks have passed, the players have not received any kit.

CK Jerath, secretary, CABA, however, denied the charges. “All the members who took part in the National meets were given coupon worth Rs 310 to buy a pair of shoe. I have got their signatures also,” said Jerath.

The pugilists, however, said that they had put in extra money to buy a proper pair of shoes from a particular shop, but they never got playing kit as promised.

Though the players took part in the National meet without proper kit, the secretary boarded the flight from Delhi to Vishakhapatnam and back. The secretary, however, said that he had to attend an urgent meeting, and was short of time, which forced him to take the flight. Besides the passage was sponsored by close friend and was not from the CBA coffers.

According to one of the members of the team, the air fare was sponsored by one of the boxers, who was inducted in the team. The secretary, however, denied that his air fare was financed by one of the boxer’s parent. “I have not taken any money from the team member,” he clarified.

Surprisingly, one of the boxers, who got gold medal in the middle weight category in the state meet was left out of the final 12-member team for the Nationals. The same boxer also got a bronze medal for the Chandigarh contingent in the Manipur National Games. The boxer said that the secretary told him that he will get him a job, if he dosen’t go for the Nationals. He also said that, he was informed that the date for an interview has been fixed for March 23, the day Chandigarh team left for the Nationals. So he couldn’t accompany the team.

But till now, no interview has taken place. “I am waiting for the day when I will get an interview call,” said the boxer. The secretary, however, said that he is still trying to get a job for the concerned boxer.
