MUMBAI, MAY 29: The Nationalist Congress Party on Monday received a major set back when its nominee and sitting legislator Vijay Sawant was defeated by Shiv Sena candidate and former mayor Anant Tare from the Konkan Local Self Government constituency by a margin of 106 votes.
Out of the 561 votes, while Tare bagged 332 votes, Sawant polled 226 votes, three votes were declared invalid. Sawant was elected to the upper house from the constituency for two successive terms.
The electoral college for Konkan constituency comprises members of zilla parishads, panchayat samitis and municipal councils in Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Ever since the declaration of results, former chief minister and leader of Opposition Narayan Rane was camping in Ratnagiri district to ensure Tare’s victory. "We have taught a lesson to the NCP," Rane said.
In the by-elections to the Sangli local self-government constituency, Madan Patil of the NCP was declared elected. He defeated Congress supported Nana Mahadik. The by-polls was necessiated following the death of Madan’s father Vishnuanna Patil.
