Shiv Sena activists enforced a bandh in Bhagur town, birthplace of Veer Savarkar today, and burnt an effigy of Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar to protest his outbursts against the freedom fighter.
Sena’s Nashik district vice-president Vijay Karanjkar said he had decided to file a writ in the high court against Aiyar on the issue. He said the Sena would not tolerate insults to great personalities like Savarkar, who were worshipped by Hindus.
District Shiv Sena president Datta Gaikwad also said his party would not allow Aiyar to enter Nashik district as a mark of protest. Today’s bandh paralysed life in Bhagur town. Shops and establishments remained closed while roads wore a deserted look.
The issue took a turn in Parliament though. Right after Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, even before Opposition members could customarily bring up the Savarkar issue, Congress members were on their feet, waving a factsheet on a criminal case involving Bharti. With both ruling and opposition members persisting with their demand, Deputy Chairman Rehman Khan adjourned the House till 2.30 pm. Congress members, led by Jairam Ramesh, demanded that Bharti resign in the face of an arrest warrant issued by a Hubli court against her and 21 others on charges of attempting to commit murder, assaulting public servant and rioting with deadly weapons.
