With medium-pacer Ishant Sharma forced to sit out of the first one-day international against England in Rajkot due to an ankle sprain, the Indian selection committee is taking no chances with Zaheer Khan.
It has been learnt that the committee, headed by K Srikkanth, will give Mumbai pacer Zaheer a break. The left-armer has been bowling continuously over the last couple of months. The two pacers had bowled a combined 276 overs in the four-Test series against Australia before getting a three-day break ahead of the England ODIs.
Zaheer had skipped India8217;s first net practice in Rajkot and only had a light training session on the eve of the match. On Friday, Zaheer bowled a splendid spell of 7-126-3 which saw key wickets of England8217;s Ian Bell, Owais Shah and Andrew Flintoff.
8220;We don8217;t want Zaheer to injure himself the way Ishant did,8221; says a selector on condition of anonymity. 8220;There is lot of cricket ahead and we need his services for the Test series as he is our main strike bowler. We can8217;t afford to lose him. But a lot also depends on how the first three matches go.8221;
With Munaf Patel and RP Singh in the squad, the selector feels it8217;s a good time for the fast bowler to take a break. 8220;RP and Munaf have been in squad and have not played too much cricket. We have won today and if we continue our form, we could give him a break,8221; selector added.
The first Test is scheduled to be played from December 11-15 in Ahmedabad.
