Mumbai, September 25: Seeded players had a tough time on the opening day of the ITF junior ranking tennis tournament here on Monday as unseeded Indian girls Isha Lakhani and Lata Asudani caused major upsets by ousting fifth-seed and compatriot Samrita Sekhar and seventh-seeded Yee Chen Liaw of Malaysia respectively in the girl’s singles first round.
Isha Lakhani rallied magnificently, after dropping the first set 4-6 to pip, Samrita 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in one hour 40 minutes while Lata crushed the Malaysian player 6-1, 7-5 in one hour 20 minutes to move into the second round.
In the boy’s singles first round, seventh-seeded Chandrashekar Mohanty became the first seed to bite the dust when he was sidelined 1-6, 1-6 by his unseeded compatriot Abhishek Tamhane in just 35 minutes.
Junior international Lata Asudani proved a far superior player than her rival and outplayed the Malaysian in all departments of the game.
Her domination in the first set was totally complete as she let her rival win just one game when Yee Chen managed to hold her serve in the fifth game.
However, in the second set the Malaysian fought back, after dropping her serve in the second game, to break the Indian in the fifth.
The Indian got the vital break-through in the 12th game to win the set at 7-5 and with it the match.
Top seed in the boys section, Vinod Kumar Sewa, fourth-seed Amanjot Singh, sixth-seed Harshit Sharma, third-seed Parantap Chaturvedi and eight-seed Nishank Mishra (all Indians) and fifth seed Jaya Adam of Malaysia sailed into the second round with straight set wins.

Tushar wins
Tushar Thopte has won the under-16 boy’s crown of the TI Cycle junior and sub-junior boy’s and girl’s cycle races organised by the Amateur Cycling Association of Bombay Suburban District at the Worli Sea Face here on Sunday. Tushar covered the distance of 8 km in nine minutes and 59.63 seconds. followed by Gajendra Shinde and Lovbert Lobo at second and third spot respectively.

Rhea shines
Junior international Rhea Bhandare stole the limelight on the opening day of the Rs. 1.91 lakh prize money Little Masters squash tournament at the Willingdon Sports Club here on Monday. Playing in the boys under-17 section, Rhea easily sidelined Sajan Sukal 9-4, 9-2, 9-0 to move into the second round.
Shiv Dewan of Delhi and Jagbir Jhulka of Hyderabad sailed into the second round with easy wins.
The Delhi boy crushed Arvind Singh of Mumbai 9-3, 9-3, 9-5, while Jhulka downed Kanika Premnarayan, also of Mumbai, 9-0, 10-8, 9-0.
