The Indian delegation that had gone to China along with Congress President Sonia Gandhi could not bring back any souvenir from there because they did not have the time to shop. Their itinerary, prepared by the Chinese Government, was far too packed for the ordinary Congresswallah. So, delegates complained, almost rued, they did not get the opportunity to learn about normal Chinese life. “We could not see even the traffic conditions there as the entire road would be cleared before our convoy passed,” said a senior Congress leader who was part of the delegation. Many of them who wanted to see the “real China” returned disappointed. They are still wondering whether there was a design in the Chinese Government’s planning of the visit.
