Setting aside an HC judgment, the Supreme Court today sentenced a man to death for raping and killing a six-year-old in an Uttar Pradesh village.

Accused Satish had earlier been acquitted by the Allahabad High Court.

A bench of justices Arijit Pasayat and S.H. Kapadia. noted: ‘‘We have no hesitation in holding that the case at hand falls in the rarest of rare category and death sentence awarded by the trial court was appropriate. The judgment of the HC is set aside and that of the trial court is restored.’’

The girl, a student of Sarvodaya Public School, was called away by the accused under some pretext on March 16, 2003, and taken to a nearby sugarcane field. Her body was found in the field a day later. SC concurred with the trial court saying the offence was ‘‘abominable’’ and ‘‘diabolical’’.
