
NEW DELHI, August 5: Proving their superiority, Manipur annexed the overall championship in the inaugral national sub-junior fencing championship, both in the boys and girls sections, which concluded at Jaipur, according to reports reaching here.
Manipur, winners of three gold medals out of five in the team events, added three more gold to their account in the individual events. Rajeshwar Singh secured won a gold for Manipur in boys foil event defeating his teammate Guliver 10-4. Kocean and S Reorita grabbed gold medals for Manipur in the girls foil and epee events, respectively.
Kocean got the better of Sandhya (Karnataka) in foil event final beating her 10-5, while Reorita trounced the same rival 10-4 in epee event final.
Sanjay Sahani of Uttar Pradesh displayed some fine skills before beating Prashant of Karnataka 10-7 in the boys epee event final. At one stage, he led 5-0.
Karnataka had the consolation of winning a gold in boys saber event, when Prashant outclassed Pratap of Maharashtra 10-3.
Manipur stood first in boys overall team championship followed by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. The girls section saw Manipur top the table followed by Karnataka and Punjab.
Indian girl for World Karate
Nine-year-old Gitanjali Kollara has become the youngest girl to be selected for representing India in any world tournament of karate, when she was chosen to represent the country at the Okinava Traditional Karate Kubudo world tournament to be held in Okinava from August 13 to 17.
Gitanjali Kollara, a fourth standard student in Thiruvananthapuram, has been learning karate from the age of five, under Sensai Babu of the Shaolin Karate School here. She won the last three state level championships held by the Kerala Karate Association. She will be leaving for Okinava from Chennai on August eight along with a 12-member team.
