After a 2-3 year gap, salaried taxpayers may be picked up randomly for tax scrutiny. Under scrutiny, the revenue department sends notice to select tax assesses to verify their expenditure claims during the assessment year.

According to revenue department sources, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had expressed concern that salaried taxpayers were not included in the scrutiny sample during the last 2-3 years in the recently-held conference of the chief commissioners.

The sources said the department had decided to put the scrutiny cases in two baskets: compulsory and non-compulsory. Compulsory cases will include assesses, corporates and individuals, on whom the department has conducted search and seizure operations. The non-compulsory cases will be generated through a computer-generated programme based on some economic criterion.

The department has decided to scrutinise 2 per cent of the total tax assessee base of over 30 million.
