Stuttgart (Germany), OCT 31: Two-time champion Richard Krajicek and another big server, Greg Rusedski, eased into the second round of the $ 2.95 million Stuttgart Masters Series with quick, straight-set victories.
Krajicek, who won the Stuttgart event in 1995 and 1998 and has been in the last three finals, took 58 minutes to dispose of Spanish qualifier Alberto Martin 6-2, 6-4.
Rusedski needed even less time to beat Jerome Golmard of France 6-1, 6-2, winning in 43 minutes.
Rusedski is only No 73 in the ATP Tour’s championship race that will determine the No. 1 for the year at the end of the season. Krajicek, also a former top 10 player, is No 35 in the ATP cahmpionshp race.
Neither of the two has any realistic hope of qualifying for the eight-man, season-ending Masters Cup in Lisbon, Portugal, at the end of November.
Michael chang, the only American in action on Monday, advanced to the second round by beating Jens Knippschild 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (1). Chang wasted a 5-2 lead in the second before rallying in the third to oust the German.
Another seeded player, No 13 Cedric Pioline of France, withdrew on Monday because of a back injury.
Majoli wins
LEIPZIG (GERMANY): Croatia’s Iva Majoli, the 1997 French Open champion trying to struggle back to the top, beat Sabine Appelmans in three sets to advance at the Sparkassen Cup.
Majoli, who has plummeted out of the top 100 since her Grand Slam victory, beat the Belgium player 7-5, 1-6, 6-3, in her first round match on Monday at the $ 535,000 event.
