Shooting stars
Amol Palekar has not only grown by age (which he is bound to) but he has also grown physically (meaning he looks better than before, pardon if it seems a subjective assessment). The French beard and extra weight (compared to his Golmaal days) seem to have added that extra pep in his personality. Besides being in command during the 10 day shooting stint in Pune for his docu-feature Kal ka aadmi based on social reformer and family planning pioneer of India, R.D. Karve’s life, he literally had all the scribes attending his overcrowded press conference, firmly gripped in his hand. And how! Scribes are known to shoot questions that can sometimes embarrass the host. But Amol Palekar would have none of it – so thorough was he in his work and attitude that any question flung at him was well-replied.

When asked whether he had his script ready before the shooting in Pune began or whether the research on this great social reformer is still in the process, he stated mischievously, that “in that regard you can say that my approach is not professional – all the research is over and my script is entirely ready before the commencement of the shooting. Something which cannot be termed as “professionalism” these days.” He was referring to the hit-and-run attitude of many producers and directors who often construct a script during the shooting itself!

Skin deep
For young Kishore Kadam, theatre and television personality, who enacts the role of R.D. Karve in the film Kal Ka Aadmi, it has been an enlightening experience getting into the skin of the stalwart character. He says, “Personally, I’m a very disorganised person. To ensure that I do justice to the role of the stalwart personality of R.D. Karve, I have been reading books on him and browsing through some issues of Samajswasthya which he edited for 27 long years. A few days back, I found to my utter astonishment that I had kept my toothbrush, toothpaste and tongue-cleaner in place. I was myself amazed that everything looked so tidy out here. Then, I realised that indeed some of R.D.Karve’s characteristics seem to be seeping into me! He was known to be a very meticulous and organised person and unknowingly I seemed to have acquired that quality.”

Talking of getting into the skin of any character by an actor or actress, Amol Palekar too, strongly put forth his views, when a journalist asked Kishore Kadam whether he had got into R.D. Karve’s role during the 10-day shooting stint in Pune.

Interrupting the actor was the producer-director Palekar himself, who clarified, “No one can get into the skin of the character within a few days. It happens slowly and steadily over many days and I have experienced this during my career as an actor. The shooting of Kal Ka Aadmi has just begun, so there’s no question of Kishore getting into the skin of R.D. Karve’s role already. And if he claims that, he is lying!” Wonder whether Kishore had something else to say if he had answered. Thank God he didn’t in that case, or else he would have firmly put his foot in his mouth, earning the ire of his producer-director.

Date problems
Janam Samjha Karo!. Puneites, this is probably the first song the singing queen Asha Bhonsle will croon at her concert – yes the same concert which was scheduled for November 14 – and has now been postponed to December 12. Organised by CRY, they had no choice but to change the date as the lady had date problems. The venue (SSPMS ground) and timings (late evening) will remain the same. Well, one is sure that the Puneites will forgive Ashabai, since they are understanding and love the snazzy Maharashtrian singer, who has the ability to put international singers of repute in the shade. Truly, Yeh hai Asha.
