‘Rock in Rio’ is the city’s fitting answer to the Hard Rock Cafe

Serious music lovers, pay attention. Let us rephrase that. Serious rock lovers, this one’s just for you. For a city that boasts of zilch theme-based lounge bars, tucked away in Sector 43’s boutique hotel, ‘Rio 165’ is a new place waiting to be explored. This one’s called ‘Rock in Rio’ and it sure lives up to its name to the T. Just walk down the flight of stairs alongside the main hotel and Guns ‘n’ Roses greet you first (on the wall!) followed by a neon blue haze. Sounds of a live concert lead the way as one lands on a guitar, quite literally. “Rock in Rio is my gift to Chandigarhians out there who love to rock and have a good time,” we hear the hotel’s owner Atul Grover mention as he takes us around the all-new lounge bar that is themed quite like the uber popular Hard Rock Cafe. While there are posters of rock legends and LCDs on the walls, also finding space in the neon-lit ambience are all kinds of guitars you can think of. The theme of the place travels down to the bar, which is held up by synthesizer keys and yet another guitar followed by an exclusive VIP area.

“I realised there was a community of rock lovers who didn’t really have a place to tune in for their kind of music coupled with food, drinks and of course friends,” feels Grover, who not many will know once played for a rock band in good ol’ college days! “Let’s say I have had a soft spot for hard rock,” Atul smiles to say. Speaking of performances, there’s a huge screen hogging space, one we are told will play out recorded widescreen versions of live rock concerts and also live Internet feeds on request. “Most of us haven’t had a chance to catch rock events, all of which are staged around the world. At Rock in Rio, we will conduct special nights featuring rock legends and their tours and concerts,” Grover lists out his plans. And for feelers, he recently rolled out a Guns ‘n’ Roses night that ran to a packed house. Coupling the good music is fine fare culled from the hotel’s Italian restaurant La Dolce Vita. “We are also working out a quick-bite menu that will bring in Indian skewers, kebabs and the like,” mentions Atul, as we eye the coasters styled out of Rolling Stone magazine covers. Next up we hear is yet another rocking night around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Clearly, the party’s just begun!
