River linking

8226; The article, 8216;The rivers that bind us8217; IE, June 2, is timely and one hopes that this project gets a very high priority, in view of the drought conditions prevailing in several parts of the country leading to perennial water problems. While the NDA promised bijli, sadak and paani, the new government can carry forward that idea forward and provide us with paani and bijli. A project of such magnitude should take advantage of the enormous talents within the country.
The government should consider involving experts from within the very large acadamic community, and professionals from reputed firms, on such projects. The upshot also relate to the environment, power generation, wasteland farming and thus employment and revenue generation. The onus of making Bharat into 8216;Mera Bharat Mahan8217;, rests not just with the government but also with the aam admi as well.

Crucial data

8226; It is very disheartening and alarming to read reports on secret military codes being stolen. This shows the danger which our country may have to face. Defence departments are meant to defend the country, but the theft of 18-20 computers which stored encrypted codes, algorithms and other confidential codes shows there are traitors in the defence department itself. Locating patriots is like searching a needle in the haystack. There is need for thorough investigation into this issue and exemplary punishment.

Privatising airports

8226; It has become apparent that the UPA has started to find the going tough with the Left parties, particularly the CPM, breathing down its neck on almost everything that it is trying to do, be it the Cabinet formation or economic issues. A.B.Bardhan of the CPI had earlier stated that ministers, against whom there are criminal cases must not remain in the cabinet. The government seems to have pacified him for the moment since ministers with criminal backgrounds are still in the government. Now the CPM is creating problems in the matter of privatising airports. What is evident from all this is that the left parties are trying to extract maximum advantage for the support they are supposedly extending to the UPA. While they might not have any serious objections to the policies of the government, they will not stop raising their nuisance level whenever these are discussed in order to play to the gallery. How the Congress and its allies would deal with such arm-twisting methods would be interesting to watch.

8226; One fails to understand the cliche used in every economic policy statement from the UPA government that it is dictated by the Left. Limiting FDI in airports is, after all, a demand made by many sections of the society. Countries like Malaysia too which opened themselves to FDI in a big way insist on limits and mandatory partnership for local companies.
