CHANDIGARH, January 7: A large number of Congress workers owing allegiance to former chief of the Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee (CTCC), Venod Sharma, today took part in a dharna outside the Congress Bhawan in Sector 35, to protest the decision of the Pradesh Election Committee (PEC) to recommend the candidature of Pawan Kumar Bansal for the Chandigarh parliamentary seat.
Congress leaders, including Gurbachan Singh, Manjit Kaur and J.N. Shastri, criticised the decision of the PEC. The protesters charged the PEC with playing a "fraud" with Congressmen, and accused Bansal of being a "weak and uninfluential" leader.
They demanded that Venod Sharma be given the Congress ticket for the Chandigarh seat, after cancelling the candidature of Bansal.
Those owing allegiance to Bansal, on the other hand, condemned the dharna and appealed to Congress president Sitaram Kesri for initiating action against the "disgruntled partymen".
In a joint press release, CTCC office-bearers Daulat Ram Sharma, B.B. Bahl, Subhash Chawla, Surinder Bhatia, D.D. Jindal, Sandeep Singh, K.S. Panchhi, Pradeep Chabra, Parampal Singh Matharoo, Rajiv Sharma, Pawan Sharma and O.P. Verma, while sending a report of today’s events to the Congress high command, demanded disciplinary action against Gurbachan Singh, Manjit Kaur and J.N. Shastri, besides other participants. They also charged the BJP with sponsoring such a show.
