
GURDASPUR, July 28: A record production of 1.25 to 1.30 crore tonnes of paddy was expected in Punjab this year. This was disclosed by Punjab Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Madan Mohan Mittal in a meeting with the representatives of the various procurement and purchase agencies held here on Sunday. He said as compared to one crore tonnes of paddy production the previous year the production was higher this time because of sufficient rains and bringing more land under paddy cultivation, the Minister said.
Mittal said that such meetings were being held in every district of the state and this was the sixth meeting. He said that these meetings aimed at providing more facilities to the farmers for the purchase and procurement of paddy.The Minister directed heads of the procurement and purchase agencies and others involved in the process to ensure proper arrangements. He said that lifting of paddy would be done within 72 hours of its arrival in the various mandis and said that the procurement and purchase of paddy was likely to begin on September 30.
Deputy Commissioner S.K. Sandhu assured that all arrangements would be made well in time to help the farmers. A.S Chatwal, director of Food and Civil Supplies Department, Kartar Singh Pahra, Jagdish Sahni, Ram Lal, Roop Rani and Satpal Saini, all MLAs were also present in the meeting.
