Record excise duty evasion detected

Speaking to The Indian Express, Singh said in 1996-97, the department had recovered Rs 4.77 crore duty evasion from 50 medium and big entrepreneurs. 8220;Initially, there were only two anti-evasion groups. Looking to the scope for duty evasion, the department had increased the group number totalling to four,8221; he said adding that these groups are heading by a Assistant Commissioner with four superientendents. The superintendents are assisted by four to five inspectors in a group.

In 1992-93, the department had recovered Rs 4.10 crore from 84 entrepreneurs. In1993-94, the amount increased to Rs 10.45 crore with cases against 88 duty evaders. The department had registered the cases against 57 medium and big unit holders and recovered Rs 1.85 crore in 1995-96, Singh informed.

8220;We have sealed all leaks in connection with duty evasion,8221; he said adding that intensive checks have been started by the department in all parts of Vidarbha.

Speaking about corruption charges against Excise officials, he said the number of cases of corruption by Excise officials are on the decline. The department has reconstituted its Public Grievances Rederessal Committee for financial years 1998-99 and 1999-2000, he said adding that the committee would examine individual as well as general grievances, complaints of the assessees. Even oral complaints would be taken note of by the committee during discussion in the meeting, he informed.
