JAMSHEDPUR, OCTOBER 12: International Master RB Ramesh and fifth seed double GM-norm holder Sriram Jha lost their third round matches on yet another day of upsets at the Tata Steel 38th National B chess championship here on Thursday.
Budding youngster Arghyadeep Das of Goodricke National Chess Academy shocked Ramesh, who is not having a good tournament here, while Sriram Jha mishandled a winning position to go down to K Gopalakrishna of Bank Sports Board. Ten players have won all their matches and jointly lead the table after the third round.
Ramesh started the game with his favourite king pawn with white pieces and faced the Sicilian Nazdorf of Arghyadeep. In a sharp variation akin to the English Attack, Ramesh eased black’s postion in the middlegame with a trade of knights and was saddled with a weak structure on the Kingside.
Arghyadeep found counter-attacking measures and struck upon a fine combination to record a memorable victory.
On the top board GM norm holder Sandipan Chanda settled for a draw against Syed Anwar Shazuli as the game entered a dull middlegame.
