Uttar Pradesh Governor TV Rajeswar today arrived in Delhi, a day after Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav announced a CBI inquiry into the Noida serial killings. The Governor had earlier written to Mulayam, recommending that the state government should seek a CBI inquiry, a demand that the latter had been stonewalling.
Rajeswar, who will stay in the Capital for a few days, is expected to meet Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to discuss the law and order situation in the state. A Raj Bhawan spokesperson described it as a routine visit to spend time with his family based here.
The visit is significant as it comes amid demands from Opposition parties like the BJP for President’s rule in the state.
Mulayam on his part has been defending the state government and police machinery, saying Nithari was being needlessly politicised. Before relenting and seeking a CBI inquiry, he had said the state police were doing their job and that an inquiry committee had already begun work.
The last few weeks have seen a steady build-up on the UP front, with the Congress and other Opposition parties using law and order as a stick to beat the ruling Samajwadi Party with in the run-up to the Assembly elections expected in April-May.
PM meets Kalam: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, meanwhile, met President APJ Abdul Kalam today. The 25-minute meeting that was described as a regular interaction came ahead of the PM’s ASEAN tour and when ULFA killings rocked Assam for the second consecutive day.
