HAMILTON, DECEMBER 19: New Zealand continued their remarkable comeback in the first cricket Test against the West Indies by claiming four wickets in the opening session on Day Four today.

But rain allowed just 16 minutes after the break before play was abandoned. An extra hour will be added tomorrow with New Zealand well-placed.The Windies made a perfect start to the Test, getting to 282 for one on the opening day, but it has been all New Zealand ever since.

After bowling the tourists out for 365 the Kiwis replied with 393 as Chris Cairns led the way with 72.

Cairns grabbed the first two wickets as the Windies slumped to 62 for four at lunch, a lead of just 34.

Cairns bowled first innings century maker Sherwin Campbell for a duck and followed up by getting Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught behind for another duck soon after. Both wickets fell without a run on the board and more was to come.

Dion Nash got Brian Lara, caught behind for one, with the total on three before Adrian Griffith and Ricardo Powelltook the tally to 36.

Daniel Vettori then removed Powell for 30. Griffith faced 76 balls for his 11 runs to lunch while Jimmy Adams was not out 13.

They both moved to 14 before persistent rain moved in to help the Windies keep defeat at bay.

NASH CONFIDENT: Nash believes the Kiwis can still force a win tomorrow. “There’s a lot of cricket left. The wicket’s turning, Daniel (Vettori) is looking dangerous, who knows,” Nash said.

“A couple of quick wickets and we could get into them. I believe it’s certainly on if we can get it right.” Forecasts suggested the weather could improve.
