NEW DELHI: Eminent environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna vowed to continue his fast, which entered the 44th day on Friday, even as the expert committee on rehabilitation aspect of the controversial Rs 6,500-crore Tehri Dam project recommended cash payment instead of land for newly recognised additional families. “The committee was not independent as promised by the government and I will continue my fast till our demands are met,” Bahuguna told PTI. Hanumantha Rao committee, set up to look into the rehabilitation aspect of the project in the aftermath of the Chipko leader’s 72-day-long fast last year recommended that “only cash amount be paid instead of land. The cash option is recommended considering lack of land available for rehabilitation.”

MUMBAI: The city police on Friday arrested 10 members of a gang of robbers allegedly involved in the triple murder of two police constables and a watchman at Malad on November 4. Police said that the gang was arrested from Wakadi village in Osmanabad district. The robbers will be brought to Mumbai on Saturday. Earlier four persons were arrested the very next day by the Santacruz police in connection with the murder of constables Ravi Sawant and Anil Kale and watchman Ram Bahadur of Pawan Baug Housing Society. The trio were hacked to death in the compound premises after they tried to prevent the gang from escaping.

VARANASI: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh on Friday said if minority community was interested in construction of a mosque in Ayodhya, it could do so outside the Panchkosi Parikrama only. Singh was reacting to a reported statement by section of minority community that it would lay the foundation of Babri Mosque at the disputed site Ramjanambhumi in Ayodhya on December 14 next.

NEW DELHI: The CBI has registered a case against three Delhi Police officials posted with the Immigration department at the Delhi Airport for allegedly extorting money from foreign visitors. The CBI has named sub-inspector Navin Kaushik, head constable, Nain Akthar and ACIO of Intelligence Bureau, C L Bhatti.

JIND: Driven by superstition, a father on Thursday chopped off the head of his seven-year-old son to appease Goddess Kali in Bhambeva village here. The police on Friday said that Dharamvir asked his son, Shambu to lie on the ground and then chopped off his head and offered it to the Goddess. A case under section 302 IPC has been registered against the man.
