Govt sops for rain-hit farmers
MUMBAI: The Sena-BJP Government today announced a series of concessions for the rain and hailstorm affected 15 lakh farmers from Vidarbha and Marathwada.
At a highlevel meeting presided over by Chief Minister Manohar Joshi, it was decided to grant Rs 500 per hectare for procuring seeds, waive electricity bills and exempt the aggrieved farmers from the payment of interest on loans secured from cooperative banks. The financial assistance for procuring seeds will be limited for two hectares.
Appointments
MUMBAI: The State Government today appointed Ajit Warty as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister in place of N B Patil, who has been shifted to the health department. Cooperation Secretary Prem Kumar will be new Revenue Secretary in place of Warty, while S B Dodd has been appointed Rehabilitation Secretary in place of Habibullah, who has proceeded on leave. Valluri Narayan, Marketing Secretary will the new Cooperation Secretary, while Nagpur DivisionalCommissioner S S Hussan has been appointed Trade and Commerce Secretary.
Mayawati held
LUCKNOW: TheRaj Bhawan March8217; of the BSP was foiled today with the police arresting former Chief Minister and party MP Mayawati, party MP Arif Mohammed Khan as well as over 1,000 party activists in the morning. BSP workers were not allowed to enter Lucknow following heavy barricading and a red alert was sounded by the government in the State.
