Sukh Ram chargesheeted, trial in Sept
NEW DELHI: A city court today formally framed charges against former communications minister and leader of the Himachal Vikas Congress (HVC) Sukh Ram in a telecom scam case. Special judge Ajit Bharihoke said prima facie there was enough evidence to charge Sukh Ram under section 120b (conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code and section 13(1) and 13(2)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act.

The judge, after framing charges fixed September 7 for prosecution, which would continue for three consecutive days.

Heat wave toll
NEW DELHI:
Heat wave sweeping across most regions of the country claimed five more lives on Tuesday, pushing the death toll from sunstroke to 34 this summer.

The heat wave toll in Maharashtra has risen to 25 with five more deaths in Jalgaon and Akola districts yesterday, police said.

A nine-year-old boy and a 60-year-old man were among the latest victims. Jalgaon district was the worst hit reporting 11 deaths so far, as temperaturethere touched 48 degrees Celsius.

Suharto deadline
JAKARTA:
Indonesian parliament speaker Harmako has given President Suharto a Friday deadline to resign, a student leader who met the speaker said today.

“Harmoko gave the President until Friday and if by that time no reply is given, the leadership of the Parliament will instruct the heads of the (political) factions to begin preparations for a special sessions of the National assembly,” he said.
