Punchhi appointed Chief Justice
NEW DELHI: Justice Madan Mohan Punchhi was appointed the Chief Justice of India on Wednesday night, setting at rest a bitter controversy surrounding him. A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said President K R Narayanan had made the appointment on the recommendation of the outgoing Chief Justice, J S Verma and on the advice of Prime Minister I K Gujral. Justice Punchhi will take over on January 18 from Justice Verma when he retires.
Sena list today
MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena is likely to announce the list of its candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections on Thursday. According to senior Sena leaders, all the sitting MPs are likely to be renominated. The Bharatiya Janata Party 8211; Sena8217;s electoral partner 8211; will come out with its list on January 10. Originally, the Sena was to declare its list on January 11.
Onion prices
NEW DELHI: Onion prices in Delhi market would stabilise in a couple of days due to market intervention by National Agricultural and Marketing Federation NAFED, Agriculture Minister Chaturanan Mishra said on Wednesday.
Currencies dip
MUMBAI: The Indian rupee plunged by nearly 20-30 paise to Rs 39.62/72 against the dollar in line with the fall in other Asian currencies. Asian stock markets took a hit as the Indonesian rupiah, the Philippine peso, the Thai baht offshore and the Malaysian riggit fell steeply. Hong Kong bourse led the fall with shares plummeting 5.9 per cent to fall below the 10,000 level. In the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Sensex fell by 36 points.
