London bookmakers have predicted that Britan’s Prime Minister Tony Blair may remain in office for less than two years as the steep cut in labour’s majority Left punters facing millions of pounds in losses.
Cantor index, a betting house, is offering a spread on Blair’s premiership of 560-600 days, which means it expects him to step down next year between Nov.17 and Dec. 27, Daily Telegraph said in a report today.
When placing such a spread bet, a punter who believes Blair will last more than 600 days will buy the spread and make money for every day he lasts over that time, but loses for every day less.
If he believes he will last less than the spread he sells it at 540 days.
‘‘The Queen has yet to have her hands kissed and already the speculation is life as to when Blair will step down in favour of gordon brown,’’ said cantor spokesman David Buik. Brown is six to one on with William Hill, a leading betting shop, to take over as Prime minister. This means winning bets will win one sixth of the stake plus the stake.
