PATIALA, June 17: A total of 210 polling stations in Patiala district have been identified as sensitive and additional police force would be deployed at these stations to ensure free and fair polling.

This was stated by Parampal Singh Sidhu, Senior Superintendent of Police, while speaking at a meeting of the district officers to review arrangements for panchayat elections held here under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Vishwajeet Khanna.

Deputy Commissioner Vishwajeet Khanna called upon the BDPOs to ensure that there was free and fair poll and cautioned them against allowing any laxity. He said that strict action would be taken against anybody found drunk on June 20 and 21, both of which had been declared dry days in the district.

AMRITSAR:
Elections to 231 out of 1,270 panchayats have been unanimously held, said Harbhupinder Singh Nanda, District Election Officer. In a press release here today, he revealed that a total of 22,383 nominations papers were filed, out of which 3,202 were cancelled, 5,725 nominations were withdrawn and 13,455 contestants were left in the fray for the panchayat polls. He further stated that necessary arrangements for the polls to the rest of the 1,039 panchayat seats to be held on June 20 have been completed.

SANGRUR:
In 115 panchayats in the district, Panches and Sarpanches have been declared elected unopposed, besides the unanimous election of 41 sarpanches out of the 727 panchayats in the district. This was disclosed here today by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development)-cum-District Returning Officer G. R. Bansal.

Bansal divulged that H. S. Grewal, Additional Secretary Welfare has been appointed as the observer for the panchayat elections in the district. Grewal would be available at the PWD rest house for the redressal of every problem related to the elections upto June 21. Bansal said that all arrangements for peaceful polling have been worked out in the district.

MOGA:
Moga district was ready for holding fare and free panchayat elections. This was announced by Kulbir Singh Kang, Deputy Commissioner and Jagmohan Singh Dhillon, District Electoral Officer while talking to mediapersons today.

They said that 411 candidates were in the fray for the post of Sarpanch and 2,463 for panches in 191 panchayats. They also stated that in 19 panchayats, sarpanches and 2 panchayat members were elected unopposed. There would be 85 male sarpanches (general) 41 female sarpanches, 43 Scheduled Caste men and 22 Scheduled caste women sarpanches. Similarly, out of total panchayat members, 648 panches will be men and 322 women in general and in backward classes, there will be 324 men, 171 women and 2 panches.
