HOSHIARPUR: An unidentified woman, in her late twenties, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a running train near Munak Kalan village on Jalandhar-Pathankot section last evening, police said today.

PHAGWARA: One of the two youths, fleeing after snatching a bag containing Rs 6,000 from a factory owner at Nimmawala chowk here last night, was caught after a chase by the people and handed over to the police. Police identified the youth as Ganga from Bihar and recovered one country made pistol from him. His accomplice, who managed to run away, was identified as Manoj.

KAITHAL: The district police on Tuesday arrested three residents of Kithana village – Krisha Kumar, Rajesh and Sumer – for abducting and torturing two persons, Randeep Singh and Phool Singh, of Sandal Kheri village. The two were allegedly tortured for three days as Kithana villagers suspected that one of their relatives had helped a boy abduct a girl of Sandal Kheri village, who was related to them (Kithana residents)appointment.

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government has posted Rattan Singh, HPS, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who was awaiting posting orders, as DSP, State Vigilance Bureau, Haryana, against a vacant post, according to an official release on Tuesday. Jai Narain, HPS, DSP, who was also awaiting posting orders, has been posted as DSP, CID, against a vacant post mishap.

HOSHIARPUR: In another case a 12-year-old girl, whose both arms got severed in a rail accident on the same section near khudda village this morning, later succumbed to injuries in Dasuya civil hospital, police added. Her identity could not be ascertained result.

AMRITSAR: The result of Bachelor of Computer Applications Part-I examination of Guru Nanak Dev University held in April-1998 will be declared on June 24. Similarly, the result of BA,B.Sc, Part-II examination will be declared on June 25. This was disclosed here today by R.S. Bawa, registrar of the university measures.

GURDASPUR: Deputy Commissioner S.K. Sandhu, while addressing a meeting of the BSF, paramilitary forces and Army officials here today, said the district administration had made all arrangements to meet the situation arising from possible floods in Gurdaspur district. Sandhu said that the drainage department had stored one lakh sand bags to plug the breaches, in case of floods, on the banks of the rivers Ravi and Beas and the Katcha embankments (Dhussi) in the district.
