NEW DELHI, October 1: Punjab and Sind Bank Academy, Northern Railway and Chandigarh XI made the quarter-final grade in the 28th All India Gurmit Memorial hockey tournament at Chandigarh, according to reports reaching here. Railway Coach Factory, Kapurthala moved into the next round after beating Bhopal XI by an aggregate 6-5 margin in the sudden death tie-breaker.

Maintaining their winning spree, PSB Academy grounded Air Force by two first-half goals in their pre-quarterfinal encounter. Centre-half Prabhdeep (23rnd minute) and left-half Jugandeep (27th) scored one goal each.

In another pre-quarterfinal fixture, Chandigarh XI quelled the spirited challenge from Western Railway by 3-2 in a tie-breaker session after the teams played a goalless draw in the regulation period.

The Western Railway players, who had ousted formidable Assam Regiment yesterday, again put up a good show before making their exit in the tie-breaker session. After a goalless deadlock in the regulation time, Western Railway were `outstroked’ by Chandigarh XI who converted their penalty pushes through Manmohan Singh, Jatinder Kumar and Inderjit Singh. Jaswinder Singh muffed his stroke. Only Allan Barla and Deepak Gupta of Western Railway met with success in the tie-breaker. Mukthiar Singh, Chanderpal and Santosh Singh could not beat Chandigarh goalkeeper Baljit Singh.
