Brisbane, Dec 19: Gary Kirsten scored 79 and Herschelle Gibbs added 54 runs to take South Africa to 242-7 on the first day of a four-day cricket match against Australia A at the Gabba today.

South African opener Adam Bacher and Australia A bowler Adam Dale were both seeking to make a point to their Test selectors ahead of the first Test in Melbourne beginning December 26 but only Dale succeeded.

Dale knocked off the top of the South African order with a fine display of swing bowling, finishing with 3-45. Badly in need of a convincing innings, Bacher, however, failed .
