UK Hindu leaders call for action on Yamuna  

'We call upon the Indian Government to act quickly to correct this environmental crisis'

A delegation comprising leaders of Hindu organisations has asked the Indian government to take immediate steps to save River Yamuna from high levels of pollution and an “environmental crisis”.

In a letter detailing the river’s problems to Indian high commissioner Jaimini Bhagwati,the leaders asked him to convey their concerns to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“We call upon the Indian Government to act quickly to correct this environmental crisis. The Supreme Court of India has also ruled that it must be done…It is our hope that the Prime Minister will give his personal leadership to this matter to assure that further environmental damage and human suffering is averted”,the letter said.

Signatories to the letter included Brij-Mohan Gupta,president of the National Council of Hindu Temples UK and Satya Minhas,general secretary of the Hindu Council UK.

According to them,the main cause of the problem was distribution and pollution.
