Leander Paes and his Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy advanced to the men’s doubles quarter-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships,beating the Polish pair of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 7-6 (7) 6-3 in their opening round. They will take on the winners of the match between the Indo-Pakistan pair of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Frenchmen Arnaud Clement and Robert Lidstedt. Earlier,Mahesh Bhupathi and his Belarussian Max Mirnyi,seeded third,beat M Al Baloushi of UAE and Abdullah Magdas of Kuwait 7-5 6-0 in their first round match to enter the quarter-finals.

‘Stay away from India’

Worried about security,Welsh swimmer David Davies has asked his parents not to travel to India to watch him compete in the Commonwealth Games later this year. “I’m planning to fly in and,as soon as the job is done,fly straight out,” the Olympic silver medallist swimmer told BBC Radio Wales. “I’ve told my parents not to go,I’d be worried about them walking around the streets. I don’t want that on my mind,” said the 2006 1500m freestyle gold medallist.

Ravi Kumar sets up 2 records

Services lifter K Ravi Kumar on Tuesday set two new national records in men’s 69 kg category event on the third day of Senior National Weightlifting Championship. Kumar’s total lift of 306 kg (136+170),which fetched him gold,was eight kilograms more than Railwayman G Elumalai’s two-year old national record of 298 kg. Kumar’s 170 kg effort in clean and jerk was also one kilogram better than the earlier national record of 169 kg,also Elumalai’s record. The previous record holder finished second (295 kg,135+160) while Andhra Pradesh’s P Ram Babu was third (272 kg,125+147).
