The Rajasthan High Court on Friday issued a notice to Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi asking him why his bail,in a case of fraud against him in Jaipur, should not be cancelled for leaving the country without permission of the court.

The Rajasthan HC had granted Modi anticipatory bail on the condition that he would not leave the country without informing the court. The complaint against Modi alleges that the IPL commissioner,in May 2008,had pledged Rs 6 crore to the families to the victims of the Jaipur terror strike on May 13,but that the families had not received any money.

Advocate A K Jain, appearing for Nagrik Morcha, the NGO which filed the complaint against Modi, stated that Rajasthan HC justice S P Pathak on Friday issued the notice. “Lalit Modi is presently in South Africa, but did not seek the court’s permission and has thus openly violated the court’s condition. Though no time limit has been given, the case will be listed again in the court,” Jain said.

According to the FIR,Modi had handed over a cheque, including contributions from sponsors and franchisee owners,to then Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje on May 17,2008. The FIR added that the only money families had received was Rs 5 lakh from the state and Rs 1 lakh from the central government. Modi has argued that one of the sponsors had not paid up and that he should not be held responsible for that.
