The Mumbai Police crime branch on Sunday issued a look-out circular against bookie Shobhan Mehta, alleged to have left the country two weeks ago. The police have found that his last call was made from the premises of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
We have issued notices to airports across the country as we have confirmed that he fled the country through the Mumbai airport. We don’t want to discuss at this stage where he left for, said a crime branch officer.
The police allege that Mehta placed his bets through Jupiter and Delhi-based bookie Ashwin Agarwal. Mehta was earlier arrested by the Mumbai Police in 2005. Agarwal has already given details on Mehta. It becomes important to know his involvement and if he was directly in touch with any other arrested persons, said an officer.
Agarwal is in police custody since May 31 and it is alleged that he was involved in trading with 15 Pakistan-based bookies. Crime Branch sources said they were likely to issue a similar notice against another bookie,Lakhan Chouhan, believed to have fled the country at the peak of the crackdown on IPL betting last month.
Chouhan is an associate of bookies Pawan Jaipur and Sanjay Jaipur. Investigations have revealed that he was staying in the city last month and fled to Dubai around the same time that the Jaipur brothers did. His connection with Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf also needs to be probed, said a police source.
