Joss Whedon,creator of fantasy television series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer is now the director and screenwriter of The Avengers, the Marvel Studios movie that assembles several of its comic-book heroes on a mission to save the world. The cast includes Robert Downey Jr. who reprises his role as the reckless billionaire Tony Stark and his alter ego,Iron Man,Samuel L. Jackson as the law-enforcement agent Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson the superspy Black Widow. With a budget of more than 220 million The Avengers would seem like the epitome of the blockbuster summer movie: flashy,corporate and above all,big. Calling the film a drama about people who save the world and how unbelievably unhappy they are, Whedon worriedup to a pointthat its rougher edges could alienate even his dedicated fans. Its very dark and very grown-up, he said.
Nicki Minaj shot straight to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart last week with her sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,usurping the crown from Madonna,who suffered the biggest second week sales drop in chart history. Sales for Madonnas 12th studio album MDNA fell a staggering 86.7 percent to just 48,000 copies sold last week,dropping from No. 1 to No. 8 on the chart. Roman Reloaded is Minajs second album to top the chart,selling 253,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan,despite receiving poor reviews from critics. Pop darling Adeles Grammy-sweeping album 21 returns to the No. 2 spot on the chart,selling 153,000 copies in its 59th week.
