Its an unusual setting for a cricket ground. From the parking lot,walking through the practice facility towards the imposing stadium,undergraduates carrying heavy books catch the eye. In a campus that houses colleges and hostels,India and Australia will play the final game of the seven-match series that will now be merely of academic interest.
The visitors wrapped things up in Guwahati by taking a 4-2 lead,and the seventh ODI at the DY Patil Stadium will only be an opportunity for those on the bench to be a part of the action. More so for India since Australia dont have much of a bench left due to the various injury problems.
Stadium debut
But the officials at the stadium werent too bothered by the scoreline. The match is sold out,and they are planning to distribute 50,000 tri-colour flags to the crowd to make the first international game at the venue memorable.
There are a few players in the two teams who have pleasant memories of the ground from the IPL final here in 2008.
Happy memories
Shane Watson,Munaf Patel and Ravindra Jadeja were part of the Rajasthan Royals fairytale in the first season of the club tournament that culminated in Shane Warne lifting the trophy. The one stand-out performer during that IPLs opening season was Watson,and his performance gave him the opportunity to make an international comeback after a long injury break.
Watson comes back at the same venue with his reputation enhanced. He followed up his one-man show in the Champions Trophy by an all-round show in the ongoing series. He finished as the Player of the Tournament two years ago,and is the favourite to pick up the award again on Wednesday.
