Sporting Clube de Goa registered a 2-0 victory over minnows Assam Rifles with a double strike from Junior Elijah Obagbemiro and a bit of luck. The Nigerian, after missing a number of open chances including one that came off the post, sneaked in a ball from veteran midfielder Wilton Gomes on right in the 20th minute to put the Goans ahead. At the receiving end of endless attacks from Assam Rifles in the second half,Sporting doubled the lead in the final minute of the game against the run of play. Junior collected a loose ball from the midfield and sprinted through the left flank into the opposition box. Rifles defender Kuman Naoba Singh thwarted the counterattack, but the dangerous challenge inside the box resulted in a penalty that was converted by the Nigerian himself. Rifles Bulu Jigdung and Sportings Chandrasekhar Chinta were sent off after a mid-pitch brawl in the 70th minute. JCT will play ONGC in a Group B opening match on Sunday.
