Indian to be hanged in Singapore for murdering Filipina girlfriend

A 36-year-old Indian man was today sentenced to death by Singapore court for murdering his Filipina girlfriend in 2010.

Bijukumar Remadevi Nair Gopinathan was convicted of the murder of Roselyn Reyes Pascua and given the mandatory death penalty,the Straits Times reported.

Pascua,30,was found in her room at Peony Mansion,Bencoolen Street on March 15,2010 with multiple stabs including one fatal injury as the stab went through her ribs and into her heart.

Justice Choo Han Teck said the prosecution had proved its case against Gopinathan beyond a reasonable doubt.

Gopinathan did not deny stabbing Pascua,who he said had solicited him for sex,but contended that he had acted under grave and sudden provocation.

Gopinathan,who worked at a local shipyard here,was arrested three days after the killing and had in his possession Pascua’s mobile phone and some bloodstained money.

His DNA was also found on items in the room where Pascua’s body was found.

Death sentence is mandatory in Singapore for offences such as murder and drug trafficking. In Singapore,death penalty is carried out by hanging.
