Delhi win match but miss bonus point

Delhi batsmen failed to show the required application in chase of just 59,lost three wickets and in turn dropped a bonus point against Assam at the Roshanara club

Delhi batsmen failed to show the required application in chase of just 59,lost three wickets and in turn dropped a bonus point against Assam at the Roshanara club on Saturday. Despite watching Assam’s Dheeraj Jadhav make a second innings hundred, the Delhi top order didn’t show the patience or the application.

It was probably the measly target that made them overconfident. Also it will be interesting to see if Delhi will roll out a greenish wicket against stronger teams in the rounds ahead with domestic powerhouse Delhi also scheduled to visit the capital.

Unmukt Chand made a flashy 37,while Shikhar Dhawan,Aditya Jain and Punit Bisht were dismissed for single-digit scores by the Assam seamers before Delhi achieved the outright victory in 15.3 overs.

The Delhi bowlers did a great job with man-of-the-match Pawan Suyal picking up his maiden ten-wicket haul, including six in the second innings, while Sumit Narwal bagged three wickets.

During the first session Assam showed determination, the need of the hour, with Jadhav starting off with well-timed boundaries and Gokul Sharma lending good support. They didn’t lose a wicket in the first two hours and looked set to head into lunch without damage.

In the meantime,Jadhav had reached his century,a 286-minute effort which included 13 boundaries, while Gokul notched up a half-century. However, the tide changed in Delhi’s favour when they took the second new ball after 81.1 overs.

Assam lost four wickets for 50 runs over 30 minutes before lunch and went into the break with just a 44-run lead and only three tailenders to follow.

Suyal made up for dropping Gokul off Narwal. The away-going delivery was too good for Jadhav, who offered a chance which wasn’t spilled by Unmukt at gully.

After Jadhav departed after 122,Gokul too fell shortly. The rest of the batsmen were polished in just 14 minutes after lunch.

After the game, the entire Delhi think-tank huddled near the pitch to plan for their next home game against the Railways in three days time. The bowlers deserve a good rest but the batsmen have plenty of work ahead.

Brief scores: Delhi 472& 61/3 (Unmukt Chand 37 not out; Ranjit Mali 2/16) vs Assam 239 & 291 (Dheeraj Jadhav 122,Gokul Sharma 56,Pawan Suyal 6/71,Sumit Narwal 3/79)
