Concerned over our people being recruited by Taliban: Maldives

Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed said that some people from his country were being "radicalised" and recruited by the Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan to fight the government and coalition forces.

Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday said that some people from his country were being “radicalised” and recruited by the Taliban in Pakistan and Afghanistan to fight the government and coalition forces.

“We have a serious issue with this radical Islam and we need to address that. We have a situation where our people are being recruited by groups in Pakistan and Afghanistan and as long as the recruitment drive goes on,it gets very difficult for us to bring the house in order,” he said.

Nasheed, who is here on a visit, said students from his country going to Pakistan were being “radicalised” which is a “big problem”.

“They have been, yes. I am saying that Maldivian people are being recruited by the Taliban and they are fighting in Pakistan. It is a serious issue,” the President said.
